USF baseball stumbling after hot streak, falls to Stetson

Before Sunday night’s loss against Memphis, USF baseball rattled off eight straight wins.
Now, the Bulls (19-11, 7-2 AAC) find themselves on a two-game slide after losing to Stetson 3-1 on Tuesday night.

Coach Mitch Hannahs said the team was tired after traveling back from the weekend series versus the Tigers.
“I know they were dragging tail, and I told them before the game, we weren’t going to use it as an excuse,” Hannahs said. “But it is what it is.”
USF is now in an eerily similar position as last year’s team.
In the 2023-24 season, the Bulls were above .500 through 30 games, and looked to be on the upswing. However, after capturing win number 19, USF lost nine of its next 10 games.

Fast forward to the current season, the Bulls sit at 19 wins and have started a losing streak once again.
Despite the deja vu, Hannahs said the team has to keep its past behind them.
“I mean, that’s the reality of baseball,” Hannahs said. “You got to be ready for the next one.”
USF’s misfortune started early on Tuesday night. The Bulls gave up a score to Stetson’s first batter, as junior infielder Isaiah Barkett homered to left field in inning one.
The Bulls responded with a score of their own in the bottom of the second. Junior first baseman Rafael Betancourt opened the frame with a double.
He would cross home plate for the Bulls’ first run of the game after senior outfielder Marcus Brodil followed with a double of his own.
Betancourt’s run would be the first and only of the game for USF.
Steady mound play by freshman pitcher Matt Goldenbaum kept the Hatters off the scoreboard in innings three and four. He allowed just a single hit in the time frame.
However, Stetson would score two runs to break the 1-1 tie, leading to its eventual victory.
Hannahs commended Goldenbaum’s play and the rest of his bullpen. The team finished the game allowing no walks on the day.
Hannahs said the Hatters’ few scores came by luck of the draw.
“I didn’t think [Stetson] did a lot of damage in terms of really driving balls or anything like that,” Hannahs said. “I think it was just opportunistic tonight.”
The Bulls travel to Texas to take on Rice on Friday for a weekend series. All three games will be available on ESPN+.
