Four Bulls earn Big East honors

Several USF players were awarded Big East Conference honors this week after leading their teams to victory over the weekend.

Football player Delbert Alvarado and volleyball player Marcela Gurgel were both named Big East Conference Players of the Week, while women’s soccer player Autumn Browning and men’s soccer midfielder Simon Schoendorf each made the Conference’s weekly honor roll.

Alvarado was named Special Teams Player of the Week for the Big East Conference for an outstanding performance in the Bulls’ 64-12 win over Central Florida on Saturday. Alvarado played the roles of place kicker and punter in the game, making field goals from 33 and 34 yards and averaging 43.8 yards on six punts. The sophomore’s longest punt of the day was 55 yards, marking the fifth straight game he has kicked a punt over 50 yards.

Gurgel earned Conference Player of the Week honors after helping the Bulls to a perfect 2-0 record over the weekend. The sophomore was the anchor of the Bulls’ offense during its games, leading the Bulls with 39 kills, a .411 hitting percentage and nine aces.

Browning had three assists and one goal in two women’s soccer games over the weekend, while Schoendorf had two assists and a goal for the men’s team.

Along with the football team’s decisive win against UCF, every USF team that played last weekend came away with wins. The volleyball team defeated West Virginia and Pittsburgh, the women’s soccer team took out Syracuse and St. John’s and the men’s soccer team defeated division leader Villanova.

National attention continues

In light of the USF football team’s unprecedented success this season, several national publications are featuring articles on the Bulls in the near future.

The next issue of Sports Illustrated – which hits newsstands today – will feature a story about USF titled “Fresh Juice in Florida.” The article, written by Phil Taylor, has even earned a spot on the magazine’s cover in the form of a ribbon text box in the lower right-hand corner.

USA Today is running a USF story in Thursday’s paper while ESPN the Magazine will feature an article on the Bulls in its Oct. 24 issue.
