Cartoons not for the kids

After a long, hard day of work and cramming for exams, it feels great to kick back, relax and watch some television. The problem is it’s late at night and you think nothing good is on the tube.

Don’t feel that you are stuck watching infomercials — Adult Swim is there to save your night.

The Cartoon Network is a great station for kids during the day, but it caters to an older audience once it is past the kid’s bedtimes. Adult Swim is a block of programming beginning at 11 on Cartoon Network. Whether you’re looking for something funny and witty such as Family Guy or a serious animated drama such as Cowboy Bebop, Adult Swim offers a variety of shows.

Animated science-fiction shows don’t have to revolve around teenage boys and giant robots, but if it’s giant robots you want, then The Big O is the show for you. It’s not only one of the most stylish shows of its genre, but it is also an intense drama that explores the human condition. A shroud of mystery surrounds Paradigm City, where everyone has lost their memory. How can an entire city have a future when it doesn’t even have a past? The show revolves around the city’s “negotiator,” Roger Smith, who helps protect Paradigm City with the aid of his “Megadeus,” a giant robot named Big O. Cartoon Network has advertised The Big O as “Gundam meets Batman.”

Ghost In The Shell: Stand-Alone Complex is one of the most critically acclaimed animated science-fiction series made famous on Adult Swim. Its blend of impressive visuals and deep, intellectual story lines and ideas are the reasons for its success. The show takes place in the not-so-distant future when cybergenetic implants and enhancements such as “cyber-brains” and weapons are installed into the human body. Primary characters include female cyborg Major Motoko Kusanagi and her male cyborg counterpart Batou. They are both agents of “Section 9,” a branch of security that handles issues beyond the police and military such as dealing with “cyber-criminals.” This anime revolves around existentialism and was spawned after the success of the movie Ghost In The Shell.

Let’s not forget that animated comedies including Futurama and American Dad are also shown on Adult Swim. In addition, the lineup contains some comedies you’ll only see exclusively on Adult Swim, such as the wildly popular Aqua Teen Hunger Force, 12 oz. Mouse, Stroker and Hoop and Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law. The shows are as funny and witty as they are unique. No matter what your tastes, there is always something for the night owls on Adult Swim.
