Bulls begin season with home exhibition
The USF women’s basketball team opens its preseason schedule at 7 tonight in the Sun Dome against the Premier Players.
The Premier Players, an exhibition team of former college players, are 2-0 this season with wins over Florida International and Miami. Last year, the Premier Players won a one-point contest over the Bulls with two late free throws.
This is the first of two preseason games for the Bulls before the team opens the regular season at Wagner on Nov. 21. USF also hosts Miami AAU on Nov. 16 in the Corral.
This will be the first game action for Coach Jose Fernandez’s newcomers, which comprised the nation’s 30th-ranked recruiting class, including junior-college transfer Rae Rae Sayles, who scored 18 points and hit four-of-five three-pointers in the annual Green and Gold game last Saturday.
Former USF player Jameelah Trimble, a 6-foot-5 post player who started last season at center for USF, will play for the Premier Players. Trimble set the school record for blocks in a season with 56 last year, while averaging 9.4 points and 7.1 rebounds in 20 games. She left the team mid-season for undisclosed reasons.
USF finishes 7th in final fall tournament
The USF women’s golf team shot a 920 to take seventh at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate. The team posted a 36-hole 614 Tuesday, falling from its opening day fifth spot. Notre Dame shot 892 to win the tournament.
Amanda Smith shot 225 to tie for ninth, eight strokes behind winner Adrienne Millican of East Carolina.
It was the team’s last match of the fall season, and ended the Bulls’ two-tournament winning streak. The team will open its spring schedule at the Pinehurst Challenge on Feb. 27.
