Chicago’s 13 leads Oscar nods

Tied for the second most nominations ever, Chicago will walk into Hollywood’s biggest night with a baker’s dozen. Also nominated this year for best picture is the second Lord of the Rings installment, but Peter Jackson loses out on a consecutive directing honor in favor of Spain’s popular Pedro Almodóvar. The surprise pick this year is Roman Polanski’s The Pianist, which garnered three top nominations. While The Hours and Gangs of New York round out the top prize short list, early favorite Road to Perdition misses the cut. The Academy Awards will be handed out Sunday, March 23.
