Bulls, Lions play two
The USF softball team takes on Penn State in a doubleheader today at 5 at the USF Softball Complex. Both teams were NCAA Regional participants last season but are off to subpar starts.The Bulls (7-14-1) lost two of three games to Houston in a Conference USA series Saturday and Sunday at home, while Penn State (3-8) dropped its last five games. The Nittany Lions’ most recent loss was a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Central Michigan on Monday.
The Bulls and Nittany Lions played each other March 8 last year, with the Bulls earning a 3-2 victory. Outfielder Gina Bianchini leads the Nittany Lions in batting average (.303), while senior third baseman Jennifer Tripken has seven RBI and 17 total bases. Tripken was selected to the All-NCAA Region 3 Tournament team last season.
The Bulls will likely counter with freshman starting pitchers Niki Trowell (2.95 ERA) and Katie Dugger (5.60 ERA) in the circle.Weather conditions may favor the team from the North. Forecasts indicate a high temperature of 63 degrees, with a low of 48 degrees. In similarly frigid conditions Wednesday, the Bulls dropped both games of a doubleheader to Michigan.
