Art and poetry festival highlights women’s, woman-centered art

According to Elizabeth Dedrick, a USF graduate student, the mainstream media has historically overlooked “women-friendly” artwork and women artists. To give these artists an outlet, the Women’s Studies Graduate Student Organization, the Feminist Student Alliance and the Women’s Status Committee will co-sponsor the third annual Women’s Art and Poetry Festival.

“The purpose of this event is to celebrate women, their self-expression and artwork that honors women and the complexities of their experiences,” Dedrick said. “We hope to foster a strong, welcoming community for women artists, artists who value women and art lovers.”

The festival will feature local artists and poets. There will be displays of women-focused and woman-created artwork. Many types of artwork will be displayed, including paintings, photography and poetry. In the past, there has been pottery, sewn items and handmade jewelry. Works may be sold at the artists’ discretion. There will also be an open mic session for visitors attending to share their own form of art.

The event will be in the Phyllis P. Marshall Center, room 270, tonight from 7 to 10. In the past, the event has drawn crowds of approximately 200. Most attendees are USF faculty, students and staff, as well as friends and family of the artists. However, the event is open to the public. Admission is free.
