In their fifth consecutive victory, South Florida women’s basketball continued their excellent season in a victory over Memphis 58-45.

USF (15-4, 4-0 AAC) extended its impressive streak in conference play, being one of only three teams in the AAC to be undefeated. The Bulls are now 13-0 against unranked teams this season.

Sophomore forward Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu had 12 points and 15 rebounds during Wednesday’s game for her 13th double-double of the season. Senior guard Elena Tsineke scored 17 points off five of 10 shooting. Junior guard Sammie Puisis added two more three-pointers to her season total.

Fankam Mendjiadeu was named to the USBWA Ann Meyers Drysdale National Player of the Year midseason watch list on Wednesday, her latest achievement in an impressive season.

An active USF defense stifled the Tigers all night long, forcing Memphis (9-8, 1-3 AAC) to miss their first seven shots. The Tigers were held to only eight first quarter points.

Memphis’ 45 points was South Florida’s second fewest amount allowed this season. The Bulls held them to a mere 33% shooting from the field, including one for 14 from the three.

Coach Jose Fernandez was critical of his team despite the victory, pointing out issues with turnovers and sloppy play.

“There’s a difference between winning the right way and winning the wrong way. We won the wrong way,” Fernandez said.

USF committed 18 turnovers against Memphis and averaged just over 15 per game this season.

“If it continues to trend we’re not going to get where we want to get to,” Fernandez said.

South Florida now prepares to take on Tulane in its fifth consecutive conference matchup, hoping another AAC victory will get the attention of the ranking committee. USF previously defeated Tulane 69-61 earlier this season on Dec. 30.

South Florida will play Tulane at the Yuengling Center on Saturday. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and BullsUnlimited.
