Bulls and Pirates battle for first Big East win
The USF women’s basketball team is still searching for a Big East win.
But so is tonight’s opponent, Seton Hall.
The Bulls, currently in the midst of a seven-game slide, will face the equally downtrodden Pirates who are fighting against their own five-game losing streak.
Both teams are winless in the Big East and have been on the wrong end of some blowout losses. Seton Hall has lost its conference games by an average of 16.5 points, including a 21-point loss at home to West Virginia and a 25-point loss at Syracuse.
USF has lost its conference games by an average of 13.6 points, including a pair of 26-point losses to then-No.1 Connecticut and West Virginia.
The Bulls came close to a Big East win on Jan. 5, but lost 57-56 to Cincinnati.
USF (9-11, 0-6) is coming off a whipping at the hands of then-No. 9 West Virginia in which USF’s top two scorers, twin sisters Andrea and Andrell Smith, were held to 16 and 12 points respectively.
USF clawed its way into a two-possession game early in the second half, with the score at 35-31. WVU responded with a quick jumper and a 3-pointer to claim a nine-point lead. The Mountaineers, aided by the Bulls’ turnovers, pulled away for good shortly after when they went on a 19-0 run that lasted six minutes of game time.
Saturday, in Chicago, the Pirates fell 77-59 at the hands of No. 13 DePaul. The Blue Demons put on the heat right from tip-off and took an 18-2 lead in the first six minutes of the game. Seton Hall (7-12, 0-6) showed life for the next four minutes but then caved to allow DePaul another big run that made the score 40-9 with 6:06 left in the first half – a 31-point Pirates deficit.
By the end of the game, Seton Hall fought back by going on a 30-10 run in the final minutes to lose by only 18 points.
Tuesday’s matchup will determine which team remains winless in the Big East.
The game starts at 7 in the Sun Dome.
