Letter to the Editor: Justin Long’s visit to USF
It is great to see role models for Americas youth addressing important issues like the rising costs of
education, the War on Drugs and illegal immigration. These are all important issues in our election but I, along with thousands of youth across the country, think there is one important thing that both the Barack Obama and Mitt Romney campaigns have failed to address time and time again, and that is the issue of climate change and clean energy in America.
Florida youth and climate leaders across the country are running the Power Vote campaign this election year to make sure young people get out to the polls and vote with clean energy as a top priority.
We are calling on our politicians to stand up to dirty energy and present platforms with clean energy futures in mind. These do not include false solutions such as coal, natural gas and nuclear energy. Energy independence means clean and renewable energy from sources like solar and wind that focus on sustainability and long-term solutions. These issues are connected to and as important as issues regarding health care, the economy and education.
This election year, citizens are concerned about our planets future and our politicians should be as well.
What will Obama and Romney administrations do to move beyond fossil fuels and address our generations greatest challenge the climate crisis?

OPINION: ‘USF can and should divest,’ a hunger striker writes
This op-ed was written by former hunger striker Leyna Vu. She was one of 17 original hunger strikers who protested for USF’s divestment. Vu wrote this op-ed while the strike was still ongoing. The strike ended on April 3. For the past two weeks, I have been participating in a hunger strike alongside 17 other […]
OPINION: Ditch the dining hall and start meal prepping.
Let’s be honest, dining hall food isn’t for everyone. For me, dining hall food lacks what home-cooked meals have in diversity and honest flavor. Walking into a busy dining hall is the last thing I want after a long day. The lines are long and there ends up not being a lot of options left. […]
OPINION: USF SG, you can’t lead a university if you can’t lead by example
Apparently, everybody has the right to speak their mind, until it’s an unpopular opinion. And the recent drama from SG leaders only further proves that there is little respect for different opinions on a university campus. USF Student Body President Cesar Esmeraldi posted a video on April 9 on both his own and SG’s official […]
OPINION: The grind never stops, but it should.
Hustle culture blurs the line between productivity and toxicity and everyone around me seems to be motivated by ‘the grind.’ This ideology is spread on social media and advocates for people to constantly work at succeeding in their personal and professional lives. It’s hard enough being a corporate-conforming girlie. Even though I plan on one […]
OPINION: Why I’m always open to learn and why you should be too
“ هل أنت جاد ,” my co-worker says to my boss. The bagel shop just finished its rush hour, and my co-workers fill the empty building with their Arabic conversation. All I understand is their body language: mouths curving into smiles and bodies leaning back to release a laugh. My white girl, Florida-raised self, has […]
OPINION: USF students, light up the ballot this fall to legalize marijuana
Ah, the high life. The issue of recreational marijuana has been debated for years. All smokers know that when it comes to leisurely weed use, the grass is indeed greener. “Of course recreational marijuana should be decriminalized. It’s literally a f—— plant,” said a sophomore respondent to a survey from The Oracle. In November, students […]
