USF women’s lacrosse ended their debut season with a final, tasteful victory.

The Bulls took down Stetson 23-6 Wednesday night. The Bulls are ranked third in the American Athletic Conference and earned a final record of 12-4.

With the regular season over, the Bulls will turn their attention to the AAC championship in Norfolk, Virginia.

On May 1 in the AAC semifinal, USF will play the loser of this Saturday’s match-up between ECU and James Madison.

If the Bulls are successful in the postseason, they could become the second debut team to secure a conference championship, after High Point in 2011.

“I hope that they’ll look back on this inaugural season and feel so proud of what they’ve built and what they’ve started and the legacy that they’re creating,” coach Mindy McCord said after the game.

Over the regular season, the Bulls have averaged 15.67 goals per game, with a season high of 23 goals. On Wednesday, they matched their highest-scoring game, which was previously set against ECU on March 22.

They have demonstrated the same highs with assists. South Florida ranked 20th in the nation in assists with an average of 7.27 per game.

McCord said it’s important to cherish the opportunities.

“We have a lot of big games coming up, so you know, really, just one cone at a time,” McCord said.

The game highlighted teamwork on the offensive side, with 10 players scoring. Attacker Juliana George took the lead with five goals, but it was attacker Sofia Chepenik who scored the first goal of the game at the 14:22 mark.

The Bulls and Stetson were neck-to-neck in the first quarter with 2-2, until midfielder Kaitlyn Tartaglione broke the tie.

Stetson scored two minutes later, but didn’t score again until less than two minutes left of the second quarter.

The same pattern occurred for Stetson in the third quarter, as the Bulls took the lead while Stetson failed to score until the remaining two minutes.

The Bulls prevented Stetson from scoring more than once during the last three quarters.

The Bulls’ minds are now set on taking the field in Virginia for the AAC Championship.

“You gotta win to keep moving on,” McCord said. “So you got to be prepared, and be ready to get to that championship game.”
