USF men’s basketball coaching staff has received an overhaul after hiring head coach Bryan Hodgson earlier this spring.

The new era for the Bulls comes with a heavy Arkansas State imprint, as Hodgson has brought his top assistants with him to South Florida.

Joining him on the coaching staff are Thomas “Tee” Butters, Jamie Quarles, Derek Rogstand and Logan Ingram. Hodgson said in a press release that he was thrilled to welcome them.

Hodgson’s staff helped lead the Red Wolves to a 25-11 record last season, in addition to capturing the Sun Belt regular season championship.

“I couldn’t be more excited about the staff we’ve assembled here at South Florida,” Hodgson said. “Tee[Butters], Jamie [Quarles], Derek[Rogstand] and Logan[Ingram] each bring a unique skill set that makes us better as a program every single day.”

The transition mirrors that of former head coach Amir Abdur-Rahim when he was hired in 2023. Abdur-Rahim similarly brought over multiple assistants from his former school, Kennesaw State, including Ben Fletcher.

Fletcher served as the Bulls’ interim head coach for the 2024-25 campaign after Abdur-Rahim’s death in October

None of Abdur-Rahim’s assistants are currently listed under Hodgson’s coaching staff.

Tee Butters – Associate Head Coach

Butters will be Hodgson’s second in command. He served in the same role with the Red Wolves last season.

Before his time at Arkansas State, Butters spent nine years on the coaching staff at Charles Southern. With the Buccaneers, he helped with the development of Phlandrous Fleming Jr., a two-time Big South Defensive Player of the Year winner.

Butters also comes from a lineage of sports royalty. His grandfather, Tom Butters, was a former MLB player and athletic director for Duke from 1977-1997. Tom Butters famously hired Mike Krzyzewski in 1982, the winningest men’s coach in Division 1 history.

Jamie Quarles – Assistant Coach

Jamie Quarles will hold an assistant coach position with the Bulls, after previously serving as an associate head coach with Arkansas State.

Quarles spent seven years as assistant coach to Hodgson, with five of those years being at Buffalo from 2017-2022.

With Buffalo, he helped the team to its first-ever top-25 ranking in 2018, in addition to coaching 2019 MAC Player of the Year C.J. Massinburg.

Derek Rogstand – Assistant Coach

Derek Rogstand comes to USF after two years with the Red Wolves as an assistant coach.

Rogstand has been heralded for his defensive acumen in his career. Arkansas State finished as the fourth-best defense in the Sun Belt conference last season.

Before his stint with the Red Wolves, Rogstand spent four years on Alabama’s coaching staff with Nate Oats. He first served as a graduate manager in 2019, before being promoted to coordinator of video services in 2021.

Logan Ingram – Assistant Coach

Ingram spent two years with Arkansas State as the Director of Scouting and Analytics. With the Red Wolves, he assisted in game planning for opponents and in producing scouting reports.

Like Rogstand, Ingram is a product of Oats’ coaching tree. He was a team manager for the Crimson Tide from 2019 to 2023.

The coaching staff isn’t the only newcomer from Arkansas State to the Tampa Bay area.

In addition to the four coaches, Hodgson has brought over Arkansas State players junior center Izaiyah Nelson and junior guard Joseph Pinion.

He has also flipped the commitments of four-star forward Tristan Beckford and three-star guard Adriel Nyorha from the Red Wolves.
