PHOTOS: USF baseball loses series against Villanova

The Bulls lost their weekend series in a familiar fashion, leaving runners stranded and putting inconsistent pitchers on the bump.

But Friday was the exception as USF (7-7) boasted a series opener 3-2 win, led by starter Corey Braun.

Braun tossed a solid seven innings with eight K’s against Villanova.

On Saturday, the Bulls buried themselves early, as the Wildcats (8-6) scored six runs in the opening frame. South Florida battled back, even pulling ahead late in the game, before dropping the middle match 12-9.

Sunday’s starter Bryce Archie took an extended start, tossing five innings before being relieved. Archie, who has been held to three innings in his previous two outings, gave up a trio of runs.

He said he’s still stretching out his arm, but doing it slowly to avoid getting injured and burning out.

Coach Mitch Hannahs gave the ball to his bullpen, which struggled to keep Wildcat bats at bay.

Hannahs said the offense is “in one of those ruts,” citing a need for early hits rather than waiting for two outs.

“We’re just making too many mistakes,” he said.

Looking ahead, Hannahs and Archie said improvements are needed on all fronts, including pitching, hitting and fielding.
