OPINION: How USF students can overcome the ‘Sunday Scaries’

Make Sunday evenings a time to look forward to, instead of something to dread. ORACLE GRAPHIC/WILL RAINSBERGER

It happens to me more often than not. I’m enjoying my weekend, resting after another long few days of classes.

A leisurely Saturday passes, and before I can kick up my feet and truly sink into relaxation, it is already late Sunday afternoon.

The weekend has slipped away from me and my stomach twists as Monday is just a few ticks of the clock away.

I have once again been hit with the ‘Sunday Scaries.’

If you’re unfamiliar, the Sunday Scaries are the pangs of anxiousness that creep up on you as the formidable shadow of an unknown week looms over.

But Sundays do not have to be dreadful. Here are some tips to defeat those Sunday blues and prepare for a new week.

Sunday self-care nights

Instead of procrastinating homework and cramming it all in on Sunday evening, try dispersing work throughout the weekend so Sunday nights can be a time to unwind.

I personally like to set my phone aside and have time to myself, a luxury that can be hard to come by in busy weeks. Sometimes I treat myself to a facemask and read, other times I will tidy up my room and journal outside for fresh air.

There are no limitations to what self-care can entail. Find an activity that refreshes your mind and do not be afraid to pamper yourself.

Movie nights

If you are someone who finds relaxation in the company of others instead of alone, an early Sunday movie night may be the cure for your Sunday Scaries.

Get some friends together, throw some popcorn in the microwave, layer it with M&Ms and watch whatever your heart desires. This routine will motivate you and your friends to complete work in time for an entertaining evening.

It is hard to worry about impending assignments when you’re focused on a character’s problems rather than your own

When I’m feeling it, I love attending a Sunday matinee at the theater. Not only are tickets discounted, but it provides a nice break in the day.

Do something nice for yourself each day

What’s even worse than the Sunday Scaries, are what I like to call “Miserable Mondays” or even “Terrible Tuesdays.” But it does not have to be like this.

A reason why weekly beginnings can feel so daunting is the lack of structure outside of school or work. If there is nothing enjoyable taking place, the days can blend together.

Whether it is grabbing a quick lunch, buying a drink at a café or taking a quick nap between classes, indulging in little moments of joy is important to confront stints of monotony and stress.

I always look forward to my afternoon can of Diet Coke. It can be that simple or spontaneous.

As put best by a line from a “Twin Peaks” episode, “Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don’t plan it. Don’t wait for it. Just let it happen.”  A motto we should all live by.
