New indie rock festival hits Tampa

Tampa hipsters can rejoice Saturday, as Live Nation kicks off the Coastline Festival, an indie-heavy music festival that starts at noon at the MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre.

The inaugural festival has been dubbed a “musiculinary experience,” and will feature a craft beer garden, food truck rally and art festival featuring local artists, in addition to the music lineup.

“We noticed a void in Florida for an event of this nature, bringing together cool new music, food trucks, craft beers and local art,” Kevin Brown, an event organizer from Live Nation, said. “We all came up with a plan and, luckily, it came together very nicely and we can’t wait for the shows to get here.”

Though this is the first year for the festival, the lineup consists of 12 bands that have played most music festivals around the country including Passion Pit, Matt & Kim, Two Door Cinema Club and Surfer Blood.

Frequent Tampa Bay area concertgoers will perhaps get a second dose of Fitz and the Tantrums and The Neighbourhood, as both bands return to Tampa after recent stops opening for Bruno Mars and Imagine Dragons, respectively.

Though most of the bands are well known in the indie-rock world, Brown said he hopes the festival will help create more exposure and be a catalyst for the bands.

“We wanted to give the audience an opportunity to see these bands and expose them and grow them into headline acts,” he said.

Bass Player for headlining band Passion Pit, Jeff Apruzzese, said that the band is both excited and nervous to be the headliner.

“It’s really weird headlining a new festival,” Apruzzese said. “We’re kind of worried whether people are going to stick around or if we will be able to deliver. It is such an honor to be asked to headline a new festival. We’re all really excited about it. “

The band Apruzzese said he is most excited to perform along with is Matt and Kim. Lead singer of Matt and Kim, Matt Johnson, said his group’s performance will be filled with high energy and excitement.

“We love the energy (festivals) create,” Johnson said. “A lot of people coming out and wanting to hear new things, having their mind open to new stuff that maybe they hadn’t gone to the festival for. We long to bring a fun show. We hope to make this festival as fun as it can possibly be.”

Brooklyn-based Johnson said that he and his real life partner, Kim Schifino, love being in Florida and doing shows here.

Surfer Blood lead singer John Paul “JP” Pitts said the festival is a great way to see different, left-of-center bands. He said that he is excited for what else the festival has to offer.

“I like that there’s going to be a beer festival as well,” Pitts said. “I’m kind of like an old man these days, where I really enjoy good food and good beer. So it’s kind of nice to have a setting like that.”

There will be over 10 craft beer vendors for concertgoers to choose from including local favorite, Cigar City Brewing. Others offered in the beer garden are Fat Tire, Kona Longboard and Magic Hat.

Local food trucks such as Taco Bus, and six others will offer different types of cuisine to choose from ranging from barbeque, to Filipino food, to a food truck that will offer exotic choices including kangaroo, lion and ostrich meat.

Though this is an inaugural event, Brown said Live Nation hopes this turns into something more.

“We always want it to be on the cutting edge,” Brown said. “This is scheduled to be an annual event that will bring new music to Florida in a unique and exciting setting.”

Tickets are $30 for festival lawn seats and $45 for reserved seats, plus fees and taxes, and are available for purchase at coastlinefestival.com.
