Letter to the Editor : Appreciating Tutoring

When I arrived at the University of South Florida for orientation, I participated in the breakout sessions that were held. The one that particularly caught my interest was the Tutoring Center breakout session. Dr. Patricia Mayor introduced herself and proceeded to tell us what the Tutoring Center was about. The following month when school commenced I made several appointments at the Center, and since then my grades have been consistently improving. I attribute my success partly to the vast brilliance of the Tutoring Center.

On my first day of tutoring, I met and interacted with a diverse group of people. Based on this interaction, I became a part of many study groups. I also began to enjoy a great wealth of academic bonding. Important information was exchanged on the methodologies that one could use to get an A in almost any class.

Furthermore, the tutors themselves became friends with the students, thus making it possible for exchanges outside the Tutoring Center. In addition to the material we learned, we also learned to emulate those tutoring us.

The Tutoring Center provides a gregarious yet demanding environment that is productive yet comfortable to work in. Being an international student, I must say that I am thoroughly impressed with the Tutoring Centers structure and efficacy. I now boast a 3.92 grade point average and I am sure that it would not have been possible without tutoring.

From the Writing Center to the Mathematics room, the resonance of knowledge is most apparent. Sometimes the Center gets a bit loud, but this is understandable under the given circumstances; we are all eager to learn. I personally feel compelled to say a very big thank you to the entire Tutoring Center team. I believe that their job goes beyond that of tutoring; it touches lives, it eases pressure and creates a deep sense of accomplishment.

I am comforted by the fact that a difficult class met with adequate studying on my part, and the much needed help at the Tutoring Center will culminate with an A, and As make me happy. I remain confident in the center and I highly recommend it, not only to international students but to every student who attends USF.
