Man convicted of killing Tampa police officer

A Hillsborough County jury found Humberto Delgado Jr. guilty Tuesday of first-degree murder. That same jury will return Thursday to recommend whether Delgado should receive the death penalty or life in prison.

Authorities said Tampa Cpl. Mike Roberts stopped Delgado and searched him in August 2009. Delgado pistol-whipped Roberts and then shot him while he was on the ground.

A defense attorney argued for a conviction on a lesser charge, such as third-degree murder or manslaughter, but prosecutors said Delgado made a conscious, premeditated choice to shoot Roberts after he was down.
