How to properly secure bicycles on campus

The more expensive a bicycle is, the more likely it is to be stolen, said University Police (UP) spokeswoman Lt. Meg Ross. Ross said more people lock their bikes incorrectly so she shared some tips on how to decrease your chances of becoming a target of bicycle theft.

Use a hard steel U-shaped lock.

Put the bicycle lock through the frame and wheel, so thieves can’t just remove the wheel and take the bicycle.

Make a copy of the bicycle serial number for your personal records.

Students can register their bicycles with the Parking and Transportation Department on campus. That way if the bicycle is stolen or pawned, UP can locate it using the serial number.

Report any stolen bikes or any suspicious people on campus to UP.
