February Athlete of the Month

Junior Lauren Shumate – Women’s tennis
Junior Lauren Shumate has played a key role for the USF women’s tennis team this season, compiling a 5-1 singles record for the Bulls who have a 1-7 record.
“Wow, I wasn’t expecting that.” Shumate said of winning The Oracle’s Athlete of the Month. “That really means a lot to me because I have been working so hard.”
Shumate was quick to recognize her teammates, too.
“I’m not a big fan for individual awards while playing on a team,” she said. “Without my teammates I wouldn’t be here. They push me so hard at practice and their enthusiasm during the matches carries me on the court. They are just a great group to be around.”
USF coach Agustin Moreno said Shumate was a key part of the team in February, battling through a knee injury to defeat VCU’s Mihuela Bunea on Feb. 22.
“I’m glad for her because she works so hard,” Moreno said.
Shumate will try to add more wins, as the Bulls play their next nine matches at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
