Grothe’s preseason stock rises

South Florida quarterback Matt Grothe, joining junior defensive end George Selvie and senior linebacker Tyrone McKenzie, has made it onto a watch list of awards given out to the best college athletes around the nation.

Grothe was recognized on the Maxwell Watch List for the second consecutive season.

The Maxwell Award is given each year to the nation’s best offensive player.

McKenzie and Selvie have been added to the Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List, which is given to the nation’s top defensive player.

Both players are also on the Lott Trophy and Nagurski Trophy watch lists, which were announced earlier this year.

Men’s basketball Big East scheduleThe Bulls announced their Big East conference schedule for the 2008-2009 season.

USF finished the 2008 season with a 3-15 conference record.

In addition to playing each conference team once, the Bulls will play rivals Louisville, West Virginia, and DePaul twice this season.

The Bulls return five players from last season including senior forward Jesus Verdejo, junior Chris Howard and sophomore guard Dominique Jones, who was selected to the conference all-rookie team last season.

Lockwood earns fifth awardFinishing the season as the first freshman to lead the Big East in batting average during conference play, outfielder Ryan Lockwood was selected by rivals.com to the first freshman team All-America list.

This award makes the fifth accolade for Lockwood’s freshman performance, adding to honors such as the College Baseball News Freshman of the Year.

Lockwood is 18th in the nation in batting and led the conference with a .523 on-base percentage.
