Note from the Editors

The Oracle ran an editorial cartoon Monday (which has since been removed from our Web site) that offended many of our readers. The comic depicted a panda tripping over the Olympic rings and falling to the ground, causing what appeared to be an earthquake. The cartoon was titled “Bad Karma.”

Many readers interpreted the cartoon as insensitive commentary aimed at the victims of the Chinese earthquake. We at the Oracle regret our decision to run the cartoon and apologize for any pain it may have caused.

The cartoon was intended to be a satirical comment on the human rights policy of China, but it crossed the line of decency and good taste. At no time was there any intent to make light of the tragedy in the Sichuan province.

Again, the Oracle apologizes to anyone offended by the cartoon and extends its condolences to all victims, here and abroad, affected by the events in China.
