Stetson (29-7, 4-0 A-Sun) at USF (32-18, 4-0 Big East)

When: Tonight, 5 and 7

Where: USF Softball Complex

The story: The USF softball team will attempt to add two wins to its five-game winning streak when the Bulls host a non-conference doubleheader against rival Stetson University tonight. The games are scheduled for 5 and 7.

Fresh off back-to-back, double-header sweeps of Seton Hall and St. John’s to open conference play, the Bulls (32-18, 4-0 Big East) have won 11 of their last 13 games with starting pitchers Bree Spence (14-6) and Christi Ecks (13-9) combining for six shutouts during the span. The Bulls will be looking for some payback against the Hatters, who defeated USF twice last season.

Stetson will also be looking to increase its winning streak when it faces the Bulls. The Hatters (29-7, 4-0 Atlantic Sun) are traveling to Tampa riding an eight-game winning streak and boast both the pitcher and player of last week in the Atlantic Sun Conference.

Stetson pitcher Erica Demers (17-1) recorded an ERA of 0.39 last week while leading the Hatters to three consecutive shutouts. The freshman right hander allowed one run off of six hits and struck out 24 batters in 18 innings of work.

While Demers was shutting Stetson’s opponents down, senior Melissa Wiggins was knocking them out. The Hatters’ third-baseman earned conference player of the week honors after going 8-for-16 with 11 RBI, four walks, four runs, two home runs and one double in six games.

Keep an eye on: USF third baseman Krista Holle. The senior is leading the Bulls in batting average (.347) and hits (50) and is tied for the team-lead in runs (30) this season. Holle is also second on the team in assists with 148 and posting a fielding percentage of .939.
