Victory in Hawaii

USF 6, UCD 4

The USF baseball team notched its first win in the Rainbow Baseball Tournament in Hawaii as it squeaked out a win over UC Davis 6-4.

The Bulls (9-5) and Aggies (5-6) both scored four runs in their respective first innings, but freshman Ty Pryor and UC Davis pitcher Dave McKae kept the game scoreless till the seventh inning.

Freshman shortstop Dexter Butler hit a two-run single in the eighth inning to secure USF’s fifth straight win.

Pryor had a rocky start after giving up two walks and three hits that led to the Aggies’ four runs, but settled down and pitched five more innings, while allowing just one hit as Tim Mattison came in relief. Mattison and Daniel Thomas — both coming off Tommy John surgery — combined to shut out UC Davis for three innings.

“(McKae) did a good job against us,” coach Eddie Cardieri said. “But we were resilient and went out there with a never-say-die attitude, and it was a battle, but we pulled it out.”
