West wins award
Freshman forward Hunter West was named Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week on Monday for scoring four goals in two matches, both victories, for the USF men’s soccer team this past weekend.
West scored a hat trick Friday against Memphis in a 4-2 win and scored the second of four USF goals Sunday as the Bulls defeated Florida Atlantic by the same score. He is the first freshman to win the award for USF in the eight-year history of the conference.
“I’m really happy for Hunter,” said Bulls coach George Kiefer. “He’s been working very hard and has been scoring a lot of goals, so I’m glad that he’s getting the recognition for what he’s been doing here.”
West now has nine goals in the Bulls’ seven games this year, just one shy of Jason Cudjoe’s team-leading total last season, helping the Bulls to a 6-1 start. He has placed 21 of his 30 shots on target.
As a senior at Manatee High last year, West enjoyed a phenomenal season, tallying 54 goals and 25 assists. He was named Florida’s Gatorade Player of the Year for his exploits.
