The Oracle named best college daily in Southeast

After years of placing second or third, the Oracle was voted 2007’s best daily student newspaper in the Southeast United States by the Society of Professional Journalists.

Two Oracle staffers also placed individually for their work.

Multimedia Editor and Sports Columnist Kevin Smetana placed first for Sports Column Writing and Editorial Cartoonist Jeff Sheridan placed second for Best Editorial Cartooning.

For placing first, Smetana and the Oracle will go on to compete in their respective categories for best in the nation. Winners will be announced at the 2008 SPJ Convention & National Journalism Conference. Hosted in Atlanta, the convention will take place Sept. 4-7.

The Oracle placed above the University of Florida’s The Independent Florida Alligator, which came in second, and the University of Georgia’s The Red and Black, which came in third.

Individual staff awards were based on writer submissions. For the best student newspaper category, SPJ selected three dates in 2007, and all competing publications had to submit newspapers printed on – or as close as possible to – those dates.
