Dozier researchers provide more answers
The families of the boys possibly buried at the Dozier School for Boys are now on track to get answers sooner rather than later.
On July 9, head researcher Erin Kimmerle and her team submitted additional information requested by the Florida Bureau of Archeological Research. The Bureau now has 15 days to make a decision regarding the researchers’ request for an exhumation permit.
The Bureau requested more information from the team on June 14.
In a 17-page report, researchers detailed their plans for future research.
If the request is approved, exhumation at the site could occur as early as fall 2013. At that point, researchers will perform skeletal autopsies, including “forensic pathological, anthropological and bioarchaeological analysis of individuals from the cemetery to determine cause of death and identification for repatriation and re-interment.”
In addition, researchers have received a six-month extension for the research permits that allow them access to the north and south sides of the campus until January 2014.
