Former Bull makes World Cup debut
Serbia defender Neven Subotic, who was with USF in 2006, made his World Cup debut on Sunday.
Subotic, who also plays for the German club Borussia Dortmund, entered as a substitute in the 76th minute of Serbia’s 1-0 loss to Ghana in the opening game of Group D.
“I only played international football for 1 1/2 years. It’s gone really fast. It doesn’t feel as great as I thought because of the result,” he said to the Associated Press after the game. “You like to dream you make a difference or, if it’s for real, at least keep the score. And that didn’t happen today, so obviously it’s mixed feelings for me.”
Once part of the U.S. national team but passed over in the 2007 Under-20 World Cup, Subotic, 21, debuted for Serbia in March 2009 then made the 23-man Serbian team roster for the 2010 World Cup.
Ghana and Germany are currently atop Group D with three points apiece, while Serbia and Australia, at 0-1 in group play, have no points. Serbia plays Germany on Friday.
“We have to put all our hope in this game against Germany,” Subotic said. “Ghana has showed not all the big names play good football in the World Cup.”
Track star shines
USF All-American David Aristil placed fifth overall after running a 51.05 in the final of the 400 meter hurdles at the NCAA Track and Field Championships at Oregon’s Hayward Field on Friday.
Aristil, who won a Big East championship in May, tied for the fourth best finish ever by a USF male at the championships. He also became just the fifth All-American in USF men’s track and field history after finishing the semifinal with a school record 50.13 on Wednesday night.
