Former Bull returns to Tampa with Bucs
Cornerback Mike Jenkins signed a one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week, bringing the former Bull back to the region.
Going on his seventh year in the NFL, five with the Dallas Cowboys and one with the Oakland Raiders. Jenkins is said to make a base salary of $1.5 million and up to $2 million in incentives.
Jenkins, who played for the Bulls from ‘04-’07, was USF’s first first-round draft pick when he was taken by the Cowboys with the 25th pick in the 2008 NFL Draft and would go on to start in nearly every game since with Dallas and Oakland.
A 2009 Pro Bowl selection, Jenkins had 10 interceptions over the course of his career averaging 34 tackles per season.
As a Bull, Jenkins had six picks, three in his senior year when he totaled 39 tackles and returned a kick back for 100 yards going First-team All-American that year.
Jenkins joins a Bucs defense that is currently trying to fill a void after losing Darelle Revis, picking up Alterraun Verner in the process. Tampa’s new coach Lovie Smith is also know to run the Tampa 2 defense — something Jenkins should be used to from his days at USF.
