Mavericks sign Jones
Former USF star and NBA first-round draft pick Dominique Jones signed a rookie deal with the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday. Terms were not disclosed.
Jones, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard from Lake Wales, was taken 25th in last month’s draft by Memphis but traded to Dallas. Mavs owner Mark Cuban paid the Grizzlies $3 million for the rights to Jones, who is the highest draft pick in USF history.
Jones is averaging 12.7 points in three Summer League games.
Griffin update
Sophomore wide receiver Sterling Griffin, who suffered a fractured and dislocated ankle June 28, is currently in a boot, and the team will have a more exact timeline once he’s off it, school officials said earlier this week.
Long-term prognosis hasn’t changed for Griffin, who is still expected to be out 6-8 weeks from the initial injury.
Report: Notre Dame transfer to USF
Former Notre Dame cornerback Spencer Boyd will attend USF and join the football team this fall, according to a report earlier this week by the St. Petersburg Times.
Boyd, a freshman from Cape Coral High School, will have to sit out this year but will have four years of eligibility remaining starting in 2011.
Boyd was the 39th ranked cornerback in the 2010 class, though he could be used on offense as a receiver.
