Pierre-Paul impresses
Former USF players George Selvie, Jason Pierre-Paul and Kion Wilson put their talents on display in front of coaches and scouts at the NFL combine on Monday.
With 27 repetitions of 225 pounds, Wilson, listed at 6 feet tall and 239 pounds, ranked fifth among linebackers participating in the bench press. Pierre-Paul, a defensive end, ran a 4.64 40-yard dash, one of the best times at his position. Most draft experts project Pierre-Paul, listed at 6-foot-5 and 270 pounds, as a high first-round pick and one of the best defensive ends available.
“Some evaluators say they haven’t seen a better speed rusher in more than a decade,” senior columnist Vic Caruccii said on NFL.com. “… Pierre-Paul was able to blow past collegiate offensive tackles, sometimes before they could even get out of their stances.”
Selvie, a defensive end listed at 6-foot-3 and 252 pounds, ran a 4.81 and 4.77 40-yard dash, while Wilson, who ran pedestrian unofficial times of 4.85 and 4.88, is still a prospect who could have success at the next level, NFL.com’s Mike Mayock said.
“(He’s someone) nobody talks about,” he said. “He’s not going to run fast, he’s not overwhelmingly big but he’s a football player. (A) 4.88 (40-yard dash) … the special teams coaches probably want something faster than that, but when you turn the tape off at the end of the day, he’s going to make plays.”
Former USF wide receiver Carlton Mitchell, listed at 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, had a successful showing on Sunday, running an official 4.49, according to NFL.com, ranking 10th among receivers.
