Student event promotes activism
Though students face busy schedules, one campus organization wants them to know they can change the world – in less than a minute.
The Coalition of Global Justice (CGJ) is holding the “Change the World in a Minute or Less” event today in the Marshall Student Center Ballroom.
Between 15 and 28 activist organizations will promote their causes at the event, said Keonna Pratt, student coordinator of the CGJ.
“Basically, all the organizations are going to have a table,” Pratt said. “These tables each will have some kind of activity or game or a demonstration that’s related to their cause to demonstrate to people what they can do to change the world in a minute or less.”
However, the event is not meant to be a recruiting process for these activist organizations, she said.
Instead, the event is to promote activism and community service, Pratt said.
“The point of it is to kind of let people know that it doesn’t take that much (time), because that’s the barrier from letting people volunteer,” she said.
Student organizations, including Necessary Improvements to Transform our Environment, People Respecting Individual Diversity and Equality Alliance, and Engineers without Borders, among others, will present at the event.
Pratt said the organizations will discuss various forms of community service, including signing petitions, planting seeds and donating clothes.
The event, which is funded by a $2,000 grant from Student Government, will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
