Women in 10th at UCF Challenge
After completing the first round of the UCF Challenge, held at the RedTail Golf Club, the USF women’s golf team sat in ninth place out of 16 schools competing. Under windy conditions in the second of three rounds Monday, USF fell to tie for 10th place, 21 strokes behind tournament leader Coastal Carolina.
“We stayed in it for the most part today,” coach Marci Kornegay said to gousfbulls.com. “The wind picked up about two hours into our round and created some difficult conditions and made the holes play a little different from the way our practice and first rounds played. We were not able to capitalize on our birdie opportunities on the back side.”
Sophomore Shena Yang, from Wharton High School in Tampa, leads all Bulls in the individual rankings after posting rounds of 73 and 74 on the par 72 course.
Yang is tied for 24th overall in the individual classification.
The UCF Challenge will end with a final round today. USF is scheduled to play alongside Augusta State and Texas-San Antonio. The round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m.
Men place second at Match Play
New men’s golf coach Chris Malloy got his tenure off to a good start as the Bulls placed second in The Match Play, held at TPC Tampa Bay in Lutz, Fl.
Second place is the best the Bulls have have finished in four years.
The team went 3-1 over the two-day event, losing to Ball State, but beating Cleveland State, Morehead State and Cincinnati.
Junior Devin Patel went 4-0 in the event with his closest margin of victory being a 3 and 2 win in the Ball State match.
