Perfect no more
There is no perfect ending for the South Florida men’s tennis team. The Bulls – who had been undefeated at home this season – dropped their match 4-2 to Virginia Commonwealth University Friday.
The Bulls took the doubles point by winning at the No. 1 and No. 3 matchups.
“The doubles did well today – they played strong matches,” coach Don Barr said.
The Bulls success in doubles, however, did not translate in the singles matches. USF’s lone singles victory was in the No. 5 spot, in which Michael Nusslein beat VCU’s Georges-Alexandre Israel (6-3,6-3). The match was decided when Mahmoud Hamed lost the No. 2 matchup against Martin Schulhauser in three hard sets (3-6, 6-3, 6-1). Lucas Jovita – No. 84 singles – did not finish his match.
The Bulls were scheduled to play Big East rival Louisville Sunday to finish the regular season, but – due to the rain – were not able to compete. The match was canceled with no makeup date announced.
USF will resume playing April 17, when it plays host to the Big East Championship tournament. The Bulls will look for a high seeding, despite the loss against VCU in what turned out to be their final match in the regular season.
“We hope to do well in the Big East (tournament) and then go and do well in the NCAA (tournament),” Barr said.
