Volleyball team splits two conference games at home
The South Florida volleyball team split two weekend matches, leaving the Bulls 12-8 on the season and 3-3 in the Big East conference.
They had a strong match Friday, winning in straight sets against the Marquette Golden Eagles.
Junior outside hitter Marcela Gurgel led USF in kills (11) and tied for a match high with 12 digs. It was the 35th double-double performance of her career.
She also added six aces, one shy of her career high.
“We’ve been talking about how important this upcoming home stretch would be and I thought we came out with the right fire and energy,” USF coach Claire Lessinger said in a press release. “Our good preparation all week led up to the way that we played today.”
On Sunday, however, the Bulls lost to the Syracuse Orange in four sets.
“I think Syracuse is one of the most disciplined defensive teams we have played all year,” Lessinger said. ”They caused frustration for us by having a fundamentally sound block and executing their game plan. They stayed in system very well. I just have to give Syracuse a lot of credit for how they played against us.”
USF had four players with more than 10 kills, led by Gurgel with 16, but were unable to muster any momentum.
USF next hosts the Georgetown Hoyas on Saturday.
