Women’s soccer picks up win
Mallori Lofton-Malachi had her second shutout of the year for the University of South Florida women’s soccer team as it defeated Kent State 1-0 Friday night at the University of Tampa’s Pepin Stadium.
The junior goalkeeper’s performance also helped USF coach Denise Schilte-Brown record her 100th career victory as a collegiate coach.
“I think we played well as a team tonight,” Lofton-Malachi said. “It’s great to have four amazing defenders in front of me who have my back, and the team came together to pull out the victory.”
Both teams struggled to find any sort of offense in the first half. The Bulls, however, held the edge in possessions and out-shot the Golden Flashes 8 to 5 in the first half.
Eventually, USF’s offensive persistence paid off.
In the 54th minute, freshman midfielder Rehanna Murani found space on the right-hand wing. She sent an accurate cross into the box, which found junior forward Amanda McCormick’s who headed the ball into the net.
Lofton-Malachi and the rest of the defense fought off the Kent State effort to equalize the game and allowed Schilte-Brown to reach a career milestone.
While most of her victories have come while at Virginia Commonwealth University, Schilte-Brown was happy to achieve the mark while coaching at USF.
“It’s nice and I hope I get a 100 more,” she said. “I think we have that kind of opportunity here at South Florida. We have the ability to recruit the right kind of players to get those kinds of results. The future is bright here, and I’m extremely excited about it.”
The win moves the Bulls to 2-1-1 this season. Kent State fell to 2-2-0 with the loss.
USF will host a home series against Stetson and Illinois State next weekend.
