Seniors to be recognized in pregame ceremony

In a pregame ceremony Saturday, eight USF seniors will be recognized for their time with the South Florida football team. Tchecoy Blount, Bernard Brown, Jimmy Fitts, Joe Morgan, Derrick Rackard, Alvin Salter, Matt Sparrowhawk and Anthony Williams will be recognized before the game.

Three other Bulls, Ken Dawson, Emerson and Hugh Smith are not participating in the ceremony because they may be able to regain a year of eligibility if they graduate by this summer.

Changes in 2002 schedule add another Conference USA opponent at home

USF’s tentative 2002 football schedule is still not set in stone. It was announced that South Florida will no longer play Indiana State Oct. 26, as scheduled. USF will add another future Conference USA opponent in Southern Mississippi at home Oct. 12, to a schedule which already includes a game at Oklahoma and C-USA opponents Eastern Carolina and Memphis. The Bulls will also face Northern Illinois and North Texas.

Bulls take traditions to NFL

As USF’s career leader in interceptions, Bulls fans know Anthony Henry has a knack for picking off passes. No one could’ve guessed though that nine weeks into the season Henry would be tied for the AFC lead in interceptions with seven. Along with Denver’s Deltha O’Neal and San Diego’s Ryan McNeil, the fourth-round pick of the Cleveland Browns trails Carolina’s Doug Evans by one for the NFL lead. This weekend, Henry recorded his second three-interception game, pilfering a trio of passes from Baltimore’s Elvis Grbac. The third straight Bull to go in the fourth round, kicker Bill Gramatica has been steady for the Arizona Cardinals. Gramatica has been consistent, hitting 7-of-9 field goals on the year with a long of 50 this weekend vs. Detroit.

Rounding out the three former USF players in the NFL is offensive tackle Kenyatta Jones. The first ever Bull to be selected in the NFL Draft, the New England Patriots selected Jones in the fourth round, 96th overall. That was one place ahead of Henry and two in front of Gramatica. Jones is listed as the back-up left guard for the Patriots game Sunday against New Orleans.

“Not only three people getting drafted, the first three guys that we had go, but to all start in their rookie season at some point?” USF coach Jim Leavitt said. “I don’t know if that happens very often, if ever.”
