IN BRIEF

Store proceeds benefit USF

Crate & Barrel opened a new location at International Plaza and the store is hosting a preview party Wednesday from 6 to 8:30 p.m., according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Cocktails and appetizers will be available, and entry is $25 per person. The proceeds will benefit USF’s First Generation Scholarship Program.

The store opens Thursday and USF will also receive a portion of opening weekend sales, the Times reported.

Civil rights icon to speak at USF

Former assistant to Martin Luther King, Jr., Bernard LaFayette, Jr. will speak about nonviolence at USF’s Westside Conference Center on May 22.

LaFayette’s message comes from his last conversation with King at the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis in 1968, just hours before King was assassinated. King shared his concern for the need to “internationalize and institutionalize” nonviolence.

The event is free and open to the public.
