Letters to the Editor

RE: Editorial Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2007

I think that having security guards on campus is a great idea. I know that I see security guards on campus much more often than police officers.

Even if the security guards haven’t sworn to protect public safety to the same extent a police officer has, I know they’re still there to help to the best of their ability. Even if they are not as well-trained and as

well-equipped as an officer, they are at least another pair of eyes out there that can contact the police and can probably do so faster than a student could. With all of the security guards, this also means that from the point of view of someone who has intentions of doing something bad, there is still someone there who is watching them and trained to do something about it.

As for the situation in Pennsylvania, that could have happened with anyone. AlliedBarton had no idea that this man would do something like this, and it’s just a freak chance that it happened with someone working for them. As long as there are real police officers on campus, I feel safe if the rest of them are security guards.
