Volleyball sweeps opening Big East series
Although the USF volleyball team has struggled this season, posting a 4-8 record before this weekend’s match against Seton Hall, the Bulls swept the Pirates 3-0 at The Corral on Sunday.
In what was their first Big East match of the season, USF outscored Seton Hall 30-22, 32-30 and 30-20.
Redshirt freshman Marcela Gurgel finished the match with a team-high 21 kills. Gurgel also added seven block assists, which is a personal best.
Seniors Ashley Reavis and Johari Williams also recorded double-figure kills with 10 each.
“I am really pleased with the team’s execution,” coach Claire Lessinger said in a press release. “We talked a lot about taking what we do in practice and executing it in matches, and when I look at the stat sheet I see much better distribution from all attackers.
Brittany (Castelamare) did a great job posting 41 assists. Most of all we worked on blocking and digging all week long, and to put up 27 block assists and to have Stephanie (Augustavo) record 20 digs, you see that everyone played their role.”
