Volleyball drops two of three

The volleyball team wrapped up its fourth tournament this season, losing two of three matches over the weekend in the Regency Suites Midtown Classic in Georgia. The Bulls opened the tournament with a 3-1 victory over Stetson, but dropped matches against Georgia Tech, 3-0, and Sam Houston State, 3-1.

This was the second consecutive tournament in which USF started off with a victory but fell in the last two matches. In the USF Smoothie King Invite on Sept. 8-10, the Bulls opened up with a victory over Jacksonville and then lost to Texas Tech and Wright State to wrap up the tournament.

Redshirt freshman outside hitter Marcela Gurgel led the Bulls over the tournament with 52 kills and 20 digs. Gurgel was the only player from USF to be named to the all-tournament team.

Gurgel was a major weapon for the Bulls in the victory over Stetson on Friday with a team-high 25 kills. Kristina Fabris added 19 kills, and Ashley Reavis recorded 14 kills and 14 digs. Stephanie Augustavo added 19 digs in the victory.

USF had an opportunity to capture the first game in the Georgia Tech match after 12 ties and four lead changes. With the game tied at 18, the Yellow Jackets finished the game on a 12-7 run to win.

The team struggled to rebound from the loss of the first game and stumbled to a 30-21 loss in the second game followed by a 30-17 defeat in the third.

Doing its best to bounce back after the Georgia Tech loss, USF split the first two games against Sam Houston State. The Bulls jumped out to a 15-10 lead in the third game, but couldn’t hold on as the Bearkats won 30-27.

After trailing 17-10 in the fourth game, the Bulls pulled to within 25-22 and grabbing some momentum. However, Sam Houston State thwarted the Bulls’ comeback to capture a 30-24 win.
