Disappointed, but victorious

Despite a 64-50 win over the Jacksonville Dolphins, the USF Bulls were disappointed with the level of play that took place Wednesday at the Sun Dome.

“Even though we won by whatever, 14 however many points we won by, that’s nothing to be happy about,” said USF guard Tristen Webb. “Believe it or not, we were supposed to beat them, but by at least 30.”

Webb went 4-of-13 from the field and came up with only 1-of-2 three pointers that the Bulls converted out of the 20 attempts they took. The three-point shooting was less than perfect, especially in the first half when USF went 0-of-10 from the perimeter.

“We didn’t shoot the ball well,” USF coach Jose Fernandez said.

The Bulls shot 25-of-84 overall and edged out the Dolphins’ shooting percentage by only .3 percent, shooting 31 percent from the field. Along with the poor field goal percentage, USF was unable to convert on the 15 steals they had. Slowing down the ball on steals and missed layups were the main culprits.

“We’ve been forcing a lot of turnovers, but we haven’t been able to score off those,” said Webb.

Though neither coach nor players were pleased with the performance, some aspects of the Bulls’ game Wednesday were positive. Center Jameelah Trimble for instance wreaked havoc in the post, going 8-of-16 from the field and pulling down nine rebounds.

“The first couple of games I rushed — too anxious,” said Trimble. “Tonight was more relaxed. I took my time working on little post moves.”

Her presence was felt not only in the points and rebounds, but also in assists, blocks and steals, for she had two of each. Trimble had four inches on the tallest Dolphin, presenting a viable scoring solution for the Bulls.

“I was pleased with the way Jameelah Trimble played,” said Fernandez. “I think this was her best game.”

Junior forward Sarah Lochmann played a decent game, going 6-of-15 from the field and 1-of-5 from behind the arc, being the second of two players to make a three.

Although lacking in points, 1-of-6 from the field, center Sharon Cambridge led USF in rebounds, bringing down seven on defense and five more on offense.

“She attacked the glass. She went hard to the glass,” Fernandez said.

In lieu of the poor performance, the Bulls have to come out this Saturday and play a better game against the Florida State Seminoles (4-1), who promise to more of a challenge than the Dolphins of Jacksonville. The Bulls will be focusing on the Seminoles in practice today.

“We’re going back and we’ll start working on Florida State because they will play a match-up zone,” Fernandez said.
