University Police found an empty gun case and empty ammunition magazines in the USF Fine Arts Building on Saturday.

Dean of Students Danielle McDonald said there is no active threat in an email to students on Monday morning. McDonald said classes would continue as normal.

“USF is actively monitoring the situation that arose over the weekend at our Fine Arts building on the Tampa Campus,” McDonald wrote.

UP determined there was no threat after a pair of canine units from the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office did not find a firearm. Officers also found some personal items with the empty gun case and empty ammunition magazines.

Law enforcement is working to identify the owner of the items.

USF’s Fine Arts Building is located less than half a mile from the Marshall Student Center.

Students did not receive a USFSafe alert over the weekend. A UP spokesperson did not say why students did not get an alert at the time of publication.

This comes after a gunman near Florida State University’s student union killed two people and injured six on Thursday.

The shooter at FSU was identified by law enforcement as the 20-year-old son of a Leon County sheriff deputy.

UP increased its presence at USF Thursday afternoon and, “in an abundance of caution,” will keep the heightened presence.

UP encouraged people to contact the department if they notice anything that “seems out of place.”
