USF women’s lacrosse makes history in blowout win against St. Bonaventure

USF women’s lacrosse redeemed itself after two straight losses with a win of 19-5 against St. Bonaventure Sunday afternoon at Corbett Stadium.
While the Bulls faced a 3-3 tie by the end of the first quarter, they turned the game around. USF pulled ahead with a 10-4 score by halftime and left the Bonnies to play catch up the rest of the game.
The match marked history for the Bulls (5-2), as the 14-point win marked the highest score differential in the young program’s history
The game also tied the record score of 19 with South Florida’s Feb. 7 debut, against Kennesaw State.

“We really wanted to focus on our run and gun style of play today,” Coach Mindy McCord said. “You saw the runs we were able to put together in the second and third quarter, and that’s our system at play.”
The Bulls took the first score in both halves, with attacker Maggie Newton leading South Florida with five goals. This is the second time a player scores five goals for South Florida in a single game.
The first goal of the game was by attacker Ava Upheus with less than 30 seconds of the first quarter she marked her 10th goal for the season.
St. Bonaventure scored at the 13:39-minute mark and the game was tied at one.
Attacker Newton broke the tie for South Florida, at the 10:35-minute mark, scoring her ninth goal of the season.
St. Bonaventure didn’t let the Bulls lead so easily, as they caught up at the 6:48-minute mark
Tied with less than four minutes in the quarter left, St. Bonaventure gave the Bulls a fight, scoring at the 3:07-minute mark of the first quarter. The Bulls scored less than a minute later.
“After a tough last two games, come out here and show, like we have been working at practice,” attacker Juliana George said. “We can do it.”
The first quarter ended with a tie of 3-3.

South Florida took the first goal of the second quarter, as Grace Brukiewa scored her second goal of the season 55 seconds into the second quarter.
The Bulls scored five goals in a six-minute period to pull the Bulls out of a tie and lead 8-3.
“One of our mantras on attack is sometimes me, sometimes you, always us,” attacker Sofia Chepenik said. “That was like really our motto is just playing together and playing for each other and doing it for each other.”
George scored less than two minutes left of the quarter, her 10th goal of the season.
Upheus scored the last goal of the first half with 15 seconds left. The Bulls were ahead by halftime with a score of 10-4.
South Florida scored three goals in the span of three minutes, while St. Bonaventure trailed behind USF, struggling to score in the third quarter.
The Bulls were in a nine-point lead by the third quarter. St. Bonaventure was left with less than eight minutes remaining to secure a score.
Midfielder Kaitlyn Tartaglione scored her fourth goal of the game at the 1:40-minute mark of the third quarter. The third quarter ended 16-4.
USF scored three more shots in the fourth quarter, while St. Bonaventure had two clear attempts and only one shot. The Bonnies struggled to pick back up the momentum they had at the start of the game.
“It’s really all of us working to get it [to score],” Chepenik said. “It’s 12 people that get the job done.”
South Florida will play Xavier at 1 p.m. next Sunday at Corbett Stadium.
