USF QB Israel Carter enters transfer portal
USF’s Israel “Izzy” Carter, who was thrust into a months-long quarterback controversy amid calls to see playing time, has entered the transfer portal Thursday.
Carter began the season as the third-string quarterback. He was elevated to the backup role when starter Byrum Brown suffered an injury against Tulane on Sept. 28.
Carter’s profile on USF Athletics’ website was taken down as of Thursday afternoon.
This season, calls for Carter to see playing time were aplenty on social media. Interim starter Bryce Archie struggled at times in his seven starts, passing for 1,679 yards, nine touchdowns and nine interceptions.
The controversy grew when Golesh repeatedly stuck with Archie as the starter despite his inconsistent play. After committing three turnovers against Navy, he said Archie gave USF “the best chance to win” since Brown was injured.
“I’ve just felt like Bryce gives us the best chance to go win the last three weeks, and so it’s not a knock on [Carter], it’s more so a compliment to Bryce,” Golesh said after the game.

Carter didn’t see any significant playing time until the final two games of the season. He threw for 195 yards and four touchdowns against Tulsa and Rice.
Carter announced his intention to transfer on social media. Although players can enter the portal early under certain circumstances, the portal officially opens on Monday and will close on Dec. 28.
“My time as a Bull has shaped me both on and off of the field and I will always be grateful for the love and support Bulls nation has shown,” Carter said on X.

“I appreciate the staff, mentorships, and relationships I have received from my coaches, teammates and the whole USF community,” Carter said.
He also entered the portal last January, but withdrew four days later. The redshirt freshman committed to USF in 2023 after decommitting from Arizona State, only attempting one pass all season.
At the time of publishing, the Bulls will return four quarterbacks next season – Brown, Archie, freshman Marcelis Tate and 2025 commit Locklan Hewett.
