USF women’s basketball are winners of two straight games with its 75-57 win over Jacksonville on Wednesday.

Despite the double-digit margin of victory, USF women’s basketball head coach Jose Fernandez was critical of how the team played, citing turnovers and foul trouble as issues for the Bulls.

Fernandez said the scoreboard didn’t reflect how the team actually performed.

“You look at the score and it’s an 18-point win, but it doesn’t feel like an 18-point win,” Fernandez said.

South Florida (4-2) took command of the game early, going up by as much as 14 halfway through the second quarter.

However, the Dolphins capitalized on USF’s mistakes, going on a 11-2 run to end the half, cutting the deficit to just five.

USF’s miscues against Jacksonville included 16 turnovers and 25 fouls.

Fernandez said the team struggled with ball security all night.

“We threw the ball over the place,” Fernandez said. “We knocked a cheerleader down, we almost hit somebody sitting courtside. That’s not good.”

The Bulls held a slim five-point lead going into the final frame, but sophomore guard Vittoria Blasigh scored 19 of her 24 points in the fourth quarter to help USF pull away late.

Blasigh said she credited her performance to the team finding her when she was open.

“I have to say thank you to my teammates, they’re like family on the court,” Blasigh said. “We share the ball, so I love how we played and how they found me.”

Senior forward Romi Levy made her return to the court on Wednesday, after missing Sunday’s game against Texas Rio Grande Valley due to a nose injury she suffered against Vanderbilt on Nov. 14.

Donning a black facial mask for protection, Levy scored seven points off the bench in 14 minutes of play.

In her four games played, the preseason American Athletic Conference preseason player of the year is averaging just 6.3 points on 27% shooting.

Fernandez said Levy needs more time to adjust to play at the level she’s capable of.

“She’s going through a little frustration on how she’s playing,” Fernandez said. “You need more practice with that kind of thing hanging on your head.”

The Bulls will next face No.25 Louisville on Sunday, their second ranked opponent of the season. USF previously played No. 2 UConn on Nov. 10, resulting in a 86-49 loss.

Fernadez said he would go home and relax before finding a game plan to beat the Cardinals.

“I’m going to go home and play with my dogs, find something to drink and smoke a cigar,” Fernandez said. “Then I’ll figure out how to get this team better for Sunday because if we play like this, it won’t be a very good outcome.”

USF will face No. 25 Louisvillle in Orlando at 1 p.m. Sunday. The game will be broadcast on Peacock and Bulls Unlimited.
