Cid defeats NCAA No. 1
USF sophomore Roberto Cid entered the NCAA Singles Championship on Wednesday facing a difficult challenge. The 6-foot-3 sophomore was matched against Clay Thompson of UCLA, ranked No. 1 in the NCAA by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
Despite the odds, Cid, the 47th ranked player in the nation, defeated Thompson (37-8) in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-3.
With the victory, Cid (22-5) will move on to the second round of the Tournament today as play moves from the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens to the University of Georgia. In this match, Cid will face the winner of Wednesday’s match, Alen Salibasic (25-9) of Drake. Salibasic is ranked 68th by the ITA.
The tournament will continue each day this week until the National Championship begins Monday between the final two players.
