Bulls leading scorer earns national recognition
Thanks to another standout week, USF junior forward Dom Dwyer is finally getting recognition on the national level.
After scoring three goals in two wins against ranked opponents, a 2-0 victory at No. 25 Florida Gulf Coast and a 3-2 home victory over No. 8 St. John’s, Dwyer was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week and followed that up by being named the Big East Offensive Player of the Week for the first time.
Dwyer has been named to the Big East Honor Roll multiple times earlier this season.
It was only a matter of time before Dwyer was honored, as he leads the Big East with 10 goals and 20 points. The closest Big East goal-scorer to Dwyer, Steve Neumann of Georgetown, has six on the year.
Dwyer’s 10 goals are the highest season total by any USF player since Jordan Seabrook’s 14 goals in 2005, and the Bulls still have six regular-season games to play.
“Obviously, I love to score goals, but I care more about the team, and whether or not we get the victory,” Dwyer said. “Scoring goals is great, but I also really love getting assists. I sometimes celebrate those more because they are rarer. I haven’t had one yet this season.”
In his final season at Tyler Junior College, Dwyer was named the NSCAA Junior College Division I Player of the Year with 37 goals and five assists in 21 games.
“Dom is a great player, but, you know, it’s not just about scoring goals,” coach George Kiefer said. “He does such a great job of getting everyone else involved, making plays for others. Also, he does a great job of moving without the ball, which sets him up for easy goals.”
Dwyer and the Bulls are in action Wednesday night at 7:30 against DePaul at the USF Soccer Stadium.
