Oracle Insight: Three matchups to watch tonight
J. TRESEY vs. J. QUINN
Perhaps an overlooked storyline in the buildup to this game is USF defensive coordinator Joe Tresey, who held the same post at Cincinnati for two years prior to being hired by USF in March. Tresey said he was familiar with some of the things the Bearcats do under offensive coordinator Jeff Quinn. At the same time, Cincinnati’s offensive staff is familiar with Tresey’s defensive schemes. Will Tresey be an advantage or disadvantage?
E. SCHWARTZ vs. J. ROGERS
USF doesn’t have a reliable kicker that coach Jim Leavitt can feel comfortable with if the game is on the line. Last year, freshman Maikon Bonani won a big game against Kansas with a field goal as time expired. Bonani is out with injury, and duties have switched from senior Delbert Alvarado to junior Eric Schwartz, who is 2-for-5 so far. Cincinnati kicker Jacob Rogers is 2-for-3.
DEFENSIVE LINE vs. T. PIKE
If Cincinnati quarterback Tony Pike has time to throw, USF could be in for a long night. Pike has only three interceptions in 174 passing attempts this season and averages almost 300 passing yards per game. The USF defense has proven it can pressure the quarterback, however, with 13 sacks in five games. The Bulls must get to Pike early and often.
