USF bars buying beer between classes

Students and faculty can't grab a beer before class anymore.

Barely a week after the long-awaited Beef ‘O' Brady's sports bar opened on campus, USF started limiting when the restaurant can serve alcohol.

As of Tuesday, Beef ‘O' Brady's can serve beer and wine only after 6 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends.

Before, students could drink beer and wine at Beef ‘O' Brady's at any time.

But that was because the University administration forgot about its own alcohol policy, said USF spokesman Michael Hoad.

"The thing we hadn't thought through was there is a University policy that prohibits people from drinking and working," he said.

The policy, enacted in 1993, outlines that no student or employee of USF is allowed to report to class or work under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Associate General Counsel of USF Colin Mailloux said students or employees could be punished if found drinking alcohol before work or class, whether they were legally intoxicated or not.

Students and employees could be written up, suspended, fired or expelled.

The spirit of the policy, Hoad said, is to prevent employees from drinking and working and to keep students from potentially unsafe situations.

"People go to science labs where they deal with things more dangerous than taking notes," he said.

USF decided to limit the times alcohol could be served because it is impossible to manage who is drinking when, Hoad said.

The University recognizes that this limit will not prevent all students and employees from drinking before working or going to class, but Hoad said it will "allow some leeway without making it too easy to break the policy."

Steve Dobrowolski, who manages food services in the Marshall Student Center, said that Aramark — the food company that owns all eateries on campus — had no input in the decision.

University Police (UP) spokeswoman Lieutenant Meg Ross said UP received no reports of public drunkenness at the Marshall Student Center last week.

Chris Rynne, a server at Beef ‘O' Brady's, said most customers last week ordered beer, and that many patrons came to the restaurant Tuesday and decided to leave because they couldn't buy alcohol.

"Right now, there isn't as many people (as there) usually is during the week," she said Tuesday afternoon. "It might be busy, maybe, after 6."

Rocky's, the restaurant located at USF's golf course, still serves beer and wine without hourly restrictions.

Other universities across the state allow drinking on campus throughout the week.

Wackadoo's, a restaurant located in the University of Central Florida's student union, serves beer and wine from 8:30 a.m. until midnight. At Florida State University, the Chili's on campus has a full bar and will only refuse alcohol to those who appear intoxicated.

Student reaction to the change is mixed.

Carly Timmons, a junior majoring in religious studies, described the policy as ridiculous.

"Now only people that live here can drink," said Timmons, who was planning to meet a friend at Beef ‘O' Brady's to have a beer before class.

Peter Franklin, a senior majoring in biology, said he sees both sides of the argument, but thinks the decision may have been premature.

"You have certain policies that are not applicable to the rest of society and students tend to feel like they're being treated like children," he said.

At 41 years old, Franklin said having a beer between classes doesn't appeal to him anymore, but might have when he was younger.

"Maybe there would have been certain days when it would have been nice to kick back with a beer," he said.

Caffeine is a drug. Will they ban Starbucks?

Just a thought here guys.
I attended the SG Senate Meeting last night and this is already a cause that is being taken up. If you wish to help with this advocacy, contact Senator James Geiger. His e-mail is jgeiger2@mail.usf.edu.
See? SG is already taking a stand on this issue and from what I heard last night, they are definitely against this policy.
You want to get involved, this is your chance.

Thank God they made this rule, there is no way I could have drank at my apartment and then have gone to class. Once Beef's opened I thought "finally I can get piss drunk before class and it will be okay since I'm on campus already", thank you USF, I would have made terrible decisions given the opportunity, you saved me. Hopefully we won't be able to drive to school anymore either. I've thought about speeding on campus once or twice and I'm afraid, given the opportunity, I might.

Restrictions are pretty dumb. I'm all for freedom of speech and choice.

However, I really don't see why this is such a big deal when just a year ago there wasn't any alcohol sold on campus-- ever. And we all survived just fine.

Personally, I don't give a care if they sell beer at all. And by the way, I bet if they had initially opened the restaurant with a scheduled time to begin serving beer, everyone would have been fine with it.

I dont understand the policy if we have night classes that begin after six. Way to go USF! Yet another failed attempt to make this university seem "better" but the rule makes no sense. If Beef O Bradys was smart, they would pull their restaurant out of USF all together. Whether you agree or not, the means in which the policy was enforced does not make sense. I am 23 years old. If I show up to class drunk... punish me. That would be a stupid move on my part. Because of the consequences, I am not going to do it. Just because there is the chance of someone cheating on a test does not mean you forbid all forms of testing at USF, you expel the person who cheated. How is this any different? Punish people for mistakes they make, not ones that they might make.

You could have done cart wheels in BOB on Tuesday. The place was pretty much EMPTY.. That goes to show if you want to sell BOB products, you sure better bring back the beer. I don't see them doing well in sales on food alone.

You should have seen the people that walked away from the bar on Tuesday. I am 23 years old Mrs. Genshaft, if I am responsible enough to unload tens of thousands of dollars into your university, I think I am of sound mind and reason to have a 4% alc/vol bverage in between my l;ast classes here. You, the university, and/or Aramark will quickly see the loss in revenue due to your premature restriction that does not exist on more reasonable campuses.

SG, THIS is an issue you should get on! Our drunken solidarity can accomplish only so much as it is widely known that drunks quickly abandon ideas that were deemed "totally awesome" just the night before.

For now, we must voice our protest by bringing our flasks and many clandestine drinking devices with us to campus! In the hidden library study group rooms, in the bathroom stalls, in the half-empty fountain soda cup you bought at Subway just before class, LET THE RUM (or your drink of choice) FLOW!

That's fine, USF. I can just go get in my car and drive the short distance off campus to go to CDB's, Applebee's, Chili's, Copper Top Pub, Acropolis, the other two Beef 'O' Brady's, Hooter's, etc., etc. to go drink. And hey, some of those have full-liquor bars for even more fun - shots in between classes!

What about USF St. Pete, which has long had Tavern at Bayboro, open during the day, "Saving the world one beer at a time." Is it really that much more uptight in Tampa?

Why haven't we, the students, started a petition to change the policy? I'll bet Beef O'Brady's had expected to be able to serve alcohol when it agreed (or maybe even bid?) to come here. And I'm sure that the Admin didn't "forget" about its policy. It was on every table in the restaurant.

When do adults become responsiblity for themselves? If the rule is not to drink before class or work, duh....if you do, you are wrong. Why punish others who would like a drink with their lunch? It might be time to review the baby rules.

This is a matter of C.Y.A. at its finest. Also, this decision will most likely cut deep into the profits that were initially expected by Aramark to begin with. So don't be surprised if after the first year, Beef's goes away and is replaced by something else. I also like the point brought up about the hi level admins of our community. Somehow I doubt they can say they never drink/have drunk during the course of their day. But hey, they are better than us I guess. This has so many holes in it it's silly. Premature at best.

So, when President Genshaft has business meetings at lunch, she doesn't have a drink? How about the Provost? Distinguished professors? They could all be written up for having a single drink?

I think they are taking "under the influence" a little to literal.
