English chair to step down at dean’s urging

Phillip Sipiora will step down as chairman of USF’s English Department, sources within the department have confirmed.

Department faculty first heard the news at a meeting on Friday. At the same meeting, sources say former women’s studies chairwoman Marilyn Myerson was announced as interim English chairwoman while a nationwide search for a replacement is conducted. It was also said at the meeting that Sipiora decided to step down at Arts and Sciences interim dean Kathleen Heide’s request.

Myerson spent 11 years as associate dean for faculty development, planning and programs in the College of Arts and Sciences before joining the Women’s Studies Department in 2001.

Sipiora declined to comment and Heide did not return phone calls regarding the reasons behind the change.
